The discharge structure at the vicinity of an anode and the associated electron induced corrosion rate were studied. As the current density increases, a new active ionization region develops immediately next to the wall as a result of field ionization. The near-wall field was found to be essentially independent of current density, and is of the order of 10/sup 5/V/m for combustion gas at 1 atm. The associated corrosion rate is less than 1 ..mu..g/C.
