Experimental study demonstrates metal-free synthesis of 2-phenylquinazolines using iodine, suggesting a practical, cost-effective route for pharmaceutical and materials chemistry.
Quinazolines are an important class of nitrogen-containing heterocyclic compounds, which are widely used in pharmaceuticals, biomarkers and materials science.A novel and efficient method for the synthesis of 2-phenylquinazolines through iodine-promoted intramolecular cyclization of N-(2-acetylphenyl)benzamide and cyanamide has been developed. This method has advantages of not using metal catalysts, simple operation with cheap reagents and step economy, offering a useful and attractive route for the synthesis of 2-phenylquinazolines and their derivatives. Keywords iodine; 2-phenylquinazoline
