Key result
Deep breathing exercises linked to ~2% higher SpO2 on POD1 after CABG versus routine care.
Why the study?
Pre-operative evaluation and preparation affect post-operative outcomes, and standardized education ensures adequate information delivery, but the effectiveness of structured deep breathing exercises education on oxygenation in CABG patients required evaluation.
Does structured deep breathing exercises education improve oxygenation in patients with coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery?
Does structured deep breathing exercises education improve oxygenation in patients with coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery?
Absolute Event Rate: 98% vs 96%

Structured deep breathing exercises education significantly improves post-operative SpO2 levels in patients undergoing CABG surgery.
May support post-CABG breathing education; hypothesis-generating and requires randomized confirmation before practice change.
Pre-operative evaluation and patient preparation for cardiac surgery affect post-operative outcomes and progress. A standardized pre-operative education will ensure that adequate and correct information is delivered to the patients. The research aims to determine the effectiveness of structured deep breathing exercises education on oxygenation in patients with coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery. The study used a quasi-experimental design. A total of 81 patients were recruited for this study. The SpO2 and PaO2 levels were measured using capillary saturation and Arterial Blood Gases (ABG). The results showed significant differences in SpO2 scores between control and intervention groups post-intervention. Hashim et al. (2021) studied Coronary Artery Bypass Graft (CABG) surgery (n=81). Structured deep breathing exercises education vs. Routine deep breathing exercises was evaluated on Peripheral oxygen saturation (SpO2) on Post-operative day 1 (POD1) (p=0.027). Structured deep breathing exercises education significantly improved median oxygen saturation (SpO2) on post-operative day 1 compared to routine care (98.0% vs 96.0%, p=0.027) in patients undergoing CABG surgery.
