Summary. A simple procedure for foetal red cell counting and determining the ratio of foetal red cells to adult red cells is described. Kleihauer's formula for converting the ratio of foetal cells to adult cells into the absolute volume of transplacental haemorrhage was found to give reliable results in a biological trial in which samples of cord blood were injected into 19 patients.
