Key result
MTHFR C677T and Factor V Leiden linked to ~136% higher odds of recurrent pregnancy loss.
Why the study?
Inherited thrombophilia has been implicated as a possible cause of recurrent pregnancy loss, but thrombophilia rates vary between studies.
Is inherited thrombophilia associated with early recurrent pregnancy loss in Egyptian women?
Case-Control (n=143)
Is inherited thrombophilia associated with early recurrent pregnancy loss in Egyptian women?
Odds Ratio: 2.36
Absolute Event Rate: 63% vs 41.9%
p-value: p=0.019
MTHFR and Factor V Leiden mutations are significantly associated with unexplained early recurrent pregnancy loss among Egyptian women.
Supports thrombophilia testing consideration in Egyptian women with recurrent loss; leaves open causal role and need for prospective validation.

Osman et al. (2015) conducted a case-control in Unexplained recurrent pregnancy loss (n=143). Inherited thrombophilia (MTHFR C677T and Factor V Leiden polymorphisms) vs. Healthy controls was evaluated on Frequency of MTHFR C677T polymorphism (OR 2.36, p=0.019). MTHFR C677T and Factor V Leiden polymorphisms were significantly more frequent in women with unexplained recurrent pregnancy loss compared to healthy controls (OR 2.36, P=0.019 and OR 2.08, P=0.046).
