CMR T1 mapping and ECV improve diagnosis, prognosis, and therapy tracking in myocardial diseases.
Why the study?
Cardiovascular magnetic resonance T1 mapping has emerged as a key noninvasive tool for myocardial tissue characterization, but its current status and future directions require synthesis.
Myocardial T1 mapping is a key noninvasive tool for characterizing myocardial tissue pathology, enabling early detection and quantification of disease processes.
May support tissue characterization in select patients; leaves open prospective validation before routine use.
Cardiovascular magnetic resonance offers noninvasive myocardial tissue characterization as a key unique strength over other imaging techniques. In particular T1, a tissue property that alters with disease, has gained prominence as a diagnostic tool. Prior to the administration of contrast, the native T1 changes with a number of processes such as fibrosis, edema, and infiltration. If a post-contrast scan is also acquired, the post-contrast T1 and extracellular volume fraction can be measured. Detecting and quantifying early and established myocardial pathological processes permits better diagnosis, prognostication, and tracking of therapy.

Moon et al. (2014) conducted a review in Myocardial pathological processes. Myocardial T1 mapping was evaluated. Myocardial T1 mapping and extracellular volume fraction measurement by cardiovascular magnetic resonance permit better diagnosis, prognostication, and tracking of therapy for myocardial diseases.
