Cardiac POC systems provide rapid on-site biomarker detection for AMI and advance toward multimarker testing.
Why the study?
Rapid, early diagnosis of acute myocardial infarction is critical for timely treatment and improved patient outcomes, but cardiac point-of-care systems are a relatively new area of development.
Cardiac point-of-care systems offer rapid, on-site biomarker detection for early diagnosis of acute myocardial infarction, with future developments focusing on higher sensitivity multimarker tests.

Cardiac POC biomarker testing may speed bedside AMI diagnosis; leaves open outcome impact versus central labs in level 5 evidence.
In Brief Acute myocardial infarction (AMI), commonly known as a heart attack, affects 785,000 Americans a year. A rapid, early diagnosis is pertinent for patients who exhibit signs and symptoms of AMI. Early diagnosis creates an ability to treat the patient sooner and, in turn, results in better patient outcomes. Cardiac point-of-care (POC) diagnostic tests provide a means to obtain rapid and on-site results. Cardiac POC systems detect cardiac biomarkers indicative of the occurrence of an AMI. This article provides a comparison of available cardiac POC systems commonly found in hospitals. Because of the fact that POC systems are a fairly new area of development, the future of POC testing includes multimarker tests with higher sensitivity and specificity than those available. Brittany Reinemund (2011) conducted a review in Acute myocardial infarction. Cardiac point-of-care (POC) systems was evaluated. Cardiac point-of-care systems provide rapid, on-site detection of cardiac biomarkers for acute myocardial infarction, with future developments focusing on multimarker tests.
