A solid/liquid bridges the gap: Although the intermediate temperature range (150–500°C) is of increasing interest for fuel cell technology, suitable electrolytes were not available. A new strategy based on solids with liquidlike properties—highly proton-conducting plastic phases of acidic, hydrogen bonded sulfates or phosphates—may close this temperature gap. In this Highlight, other alternative concepts are also explored.
