The magnetic structure of holmium with a magnetic field directed along an easy b direction in the basal plane has been studied using neutron diffraction. In small fields (⩽ 0.5 T) spin-slip structures are stabilized at temperatures which in zero field have a cone phase. Large fields at high temperatures produce highly distorted helical structures which we identify as being the recently predicted "helifan" structures. A schematic phase diagram of the various structures is presented.
