A new series of polyhalogenated, principally polybrominated polyamides have been prepared either by polymerization in a melt‐phase process at high temperature or by a low‐temperature solution process. The polymers were obtained from perchloroterephthaloyl‐, perbromoterephthaloyl‐, and 2,5‐dibrometerephthaloyl dichlorides and tetrabromophthalic anhydride with aromatic and aliphatic diamines. They were characterized by elemental analysis, infrared spectroscopy, intrinsic viscosities, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and flame‐resistance testing.
