Key result
Elevated plasma thrombomodulin correlates with nephropathy and retinopathy severity in diabetic men.
Why the study?
The significance of plasma thrombomodulin values in men with non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus and microangiopathy was unclear.
Are plasma thrombomodulin values associated with diabetic microangiopathy in men with NIDDM?
Population
34 men with non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, mean age 54 years
Comparison
Patients with nephropathy or retinopathy vs patients without these complications
Design
Cross-sectional study

Plasma thrombomodulin may mark microangiopathy in diabetic men; hypothesis-generating and should not yet change practice.
Cross-Sectional (n=34)
Are plasma thrombomodulin values associated with diabetic microangiopathy in men with NIDDM?
p-value: p=<0.001
Plasma thrombomodulin levels are significantly elevated in diabetic men with microangiopathy, suggesting its potential as a biomarker for diabetic nephropathy and retinopathy.
Tanaka et al. (1991) conducted a cross-sectional in Non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) (n=34). Diabetic microangiopathy (nephropathy and retinopathy) vs. NIDDM patients without microangiopathy was evaluated on Plasma thrombomodulin (TM) values (p=<0.001). Plasma thrombomodulin values were significantly elevated in diabetic men with nephropathy (P<0.001) or retinopathy (P<0.002) compared to those without, correlating with retinopathy severity.
