Silent mental arithmetic reduces RSA compared to speaking despite similar HR increases.
Why the study?
Does vocalization during mental arithmetic alter heart rate variability and respiratory rate compared to silent mental arithmetic?
Does vocalization during mental arithmetic alter heart rate variability and respiratory rate compared to silent mental arithmetic?
Vocalization during mental arithmetic interferes with the analysis of heart rate variability, obscuring the vagal withdrawal mechanism responsible for heart rate changes.

Vocalization may confound RSA interpretation during cognitive tasks; leaves open optimal protocols to isolate vagal withdrawal in HRV research.
Sloan et al. (1991) studied this question. Mental arithmetic with vocalization manipulation vs. Control condition was evaluated on Heart rate, heart rate variability, and respiratory rate. Mental arithmetic with and without speaking produced similar heart rate increases, but respiratory sinus arrhythmia decreased only in the nonspeaking condition.
