During work on the total synthesis of novobiocin, epi‐noviose (5,5‐di‐C‐methyl‐4‐O‐methyl‐L‐xylose), which can be epimerized by alkali to noviose, has been obtained in 15 steps from D‐glucose. The oxidation of aldehydic carbohydrates to the corresponding lactones can be carried out by means of bromocarbamide (prepared from bromine and urea) in diluted alcohol.
