Extremely naked iodide ions with unusual coordination behavior are generated from ion-pair strain in tris(dimethylamino)cyclopropenium iodide. With substituted iodoarenes, stable 1:1 complexes of type 1 are obtained and structurally characterized. The stability of these hypervalent adducts is a function of the arene's substitution pattern in much the same way as is the stability of the isomeric σ Meisenheimer complexes.
