Summary The fine structure of the cuticle of 28 species of marine macrodasyid and chaetonotoid gastro-trichs is described. According to this comparative study, the gastrotrich cuticle consists of à fibrous basal layer and an outer lamellar layer. The latter is formed of one to many sheaths which have à unit membrane-like fine structure. The sheaths (= bilayers) are assumed, based on preliminary histochemical studies, to contain some lipo-protein-polysaccharide complex. The formation appears to be extracellular, without direct connection to the cell membrane of the epidermis cell. This outer bilayer system may function in the regulation of exchange of ions at the animal-water interface. The cuticle evolution within the gastrotrichs as well as within the whole superphylum of the Aschelminthes is discussed in detail. Within the gastrotrichs Remane's (1936) hypothesis of à multiple origin of the various scales and spines is strongly supported. àLepidodasys-, à thaumastodermatid-, àChordodasys- and àChaetonotida-Pauci-tubulatina line are distinguished as different lines of cuticle specializations within the phylum. Within the Aschelminthes and other lower Bilateria, the gastrotrich cuticle supports à separation of the Rotifera and Gastrotricha and supports the view, in conjunction with other characters, particularly the myoepithelial pharynx, of close ties of gastrotrichs to the Nematoda and possibly the Tardigrada.
