A simple, one-pot process for synthesizing monodisperse gold nanoparticles in aqueous solution using multifunctional peptides is reported (see Figure). The multifunctional peptide contains a gold synthesizing/binding domain and a biomolecular recognition domain. The gold binding domain reduces choloroaurate ions and coats the gold nanoparticles while the biomolecular recognition domain can be recognized by specific antibodies.
