Key result
Hip strength measurement protocols lack standardization, with only two studies evaluating weakness in FAI.
Why the study?
Understanding the relationship between FAI and hip muscle weakness could lead to improved diagnosis, targeted treatments, and more accurate assessment of response to treatment.
How is hip muscle strength measured in patients with femoroacetabular impingement and other hip pathologies?
Systematic Review (n=29)
How is hip muscle strength measured in patients with femoroacetabular impingement and other hip pathologies?
There is a need to standardize protocols for hip strength measurement in patients with FAI and other hip pathologies.
Varied hip strength protocols limit reliable assessment in FAI; leaves open muscle weakness contribution and requires standardized measurement for future studies.
] Understanding the relationship between FAI and hip muscle weakness could lead to improved diagnosis, targeted treatments, and more accurate assessment of a patient's response to treatment. Mayne et al 11 conducted a systematic review of the literature on measurement of muscle strength in patients with FAI and other hip pathologies. A total of 29 studies published between 2000 and 2007 in which hip muscle strength was measured were identified. only two studies evaluated hip muscle weakness and FAI or hip pain. In total, 26 studies examined methods of strength measurement. on the basis of this review, the authors made recommendations to standardize protocols for hip strength measurement for future studies. 11 Measuring hip muscle strength in patients with femoroacetabular impingement and other hip pathologies

Mayne et al. (2019) conducted a systematic review in Femoroacetabular impingement and other hip pathologies (n=29). Hip muscle strength measurement was evaluated on Evaluation of hip muscle weakness and FAI or hip pain. A systematic review of 29 studies found that only two evaluated hip muscle weakness and FAI or hip pain, highlighting the need to standardize protocols for hip strength measurement.
