Previous studies of budworm impact on balsam fir stands have correlated the probability of tree damage and mortality with only a few broad stand characteristics. Improved predictability may be obtainable from a model incorporating foliage production of fir, budworm feeding rate, and tree vulnerability. Some data are presented on the first two variables with comments on further research requirement.
