To determine the relationship between seizure propagation to mesial temporal structures—specifically the amygdala and hippocampus—and the onset of ictal respiratory depression and central apnea.
Retrospectively reviewed invasive electroencephalographic (EEG) and respiratory monitoring data from Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago since 2010.
Evaluated 8 investigations capturing 22 seizures in patients with temporal lobe epilepsy who had depth electrodes implanted in both the amygdala and hippocampus.
Ictal central apnea onset occurred 2.7 ± 0.4 seconds (mean ± SEM) after seizure spread to the amygdala.
Apnea onset occurred significantly sooner following seizure propagation to the amygdala than to the hippocampus (10.2 ± 0.7 seconds; p < 0.01).
