210Po is present in significant quantities in the marine environment and is the dominant contributor to the dose arising from the consumption of marine fish and shellfish. The concentrations of 210Po were measured in a range of fish and shellfish species which are of importance in the context of the Irish seafood diet. Data are presented for plaice, cod, whiting, ray, mackerel, herring, oyster, lobster, prawns and mussels. Dose calculation parameters such as consumption rates and the mean delay between catch and consumption were determined from an analysis of Irish fish trade and consumption data. The dose to Irish seafood consumers due to exposure to this radionuclide is estimated and individual and collective dose estimates, representative of the mid 1990s, are presented.
