The mathematical interpretation of the population dynamcis of the two‐spotted spider mite Tetranychus urticae and its predator Phytoseiulus persimilis under glasshouse conditions enabled optimalization of the method “pest in first” for the biological protection of cucumbers under glass. A demonstrated dependence of the maximal population density of the prey on the initial quantities of prey and predator was used for the determination of the most appropriate initial quantities of spider mites and predatory mites for the establishment of artificial foci on the plants in the glasshouse given the economic threshold for this pest. On the basis of established migratory abilities of the predatory mite, the optimal distance between the foci was determined. In comparison with the method of N. W. Hussey the optimalization of the “pest in first” method enabled a 20 fold decrease in the quantity of introduced spider mite and a 3–4 fold decrease in the quantity of predatory mite P. persimilis.
