Surveillance report reveals persistent ceftriaxone resistance in Neisseria gonorrhoeae isolates, highlighting critical threats to standard global treatment options.
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in Neisseria gonorrhoeae is a global public health concern, and the last option for gonorrhoea treatment, ceftriaxone, is threatened.1 Most ceftriaxone-resistant strains have links to Asia.1,2 World Health Organization (WHO) has expanded and improved its global AMR surveillance, especially in Asia. The WHO Enhanced Gonococcal Antimicrobial Surveillance Programme (EGASP) uses standardised and quality-assured protocols in sentinel countries worldwide and has also implemented whole-genome sequencing (WGS).
