In this paper a critical standard method is suggested for the testing of zone refining equipment used in purifying low melting volatile organic compounds. The removal of phenazine doped into anthracene was used for this purpose by applying four zone passes and determining the resulting phenazine distribution profile by gas-chromatographic analysis down to 10−6. A quality test number is derived which for several zone refiners of various design showed great differences. The possible causes of these differences are discussed.
