The hybridization of atomic orbitals is considered from a group theoretical point of view. The earlier work of Kimball is extended to include atomic f-orbitals in the hybrids. By use of the tables presented it is possible to tell at a glance what atomic orbitals can be combined to form bonding orbitals for a number of different spatial arrangements of the bonds. The strength of the hybrids is calculated for a few particularly symmetrical arrangements. Finally, the complexes (UO2)++, UCl6, and UCl4 are discussed and it is argued that f-orbitals on the uranium atoms are used for covalent bonding.
