Rare esophageal pericardial fistula in esophageal cancer demonstrates rapid progression and high mortality.
Why the study?
Esophago-pericardial fistula is a rare, life-threatening condition with high misdiagnosis and fatality rates, yet academic diagnosis and treatment guidelines are lacking.
Case Report (n=1)
Provides a comprehensive overview of the etiology, diagnosis, and management of rare but highly fatal esophageal pericardial fistulas.
Alerts clinicians to rapid fatality risk in esophageal cancer; leaves open standardized diagnostic and therapeutic approaches.
Esophago-pericardial fistula is a rare disease, and reports about it are rare. But esophagopericardial fistula is a serious condition with rapid progression, easy to miss diagnosis and misdiagnosis, and high fatality rate. However, there are no guidelines for its diagnosis and treatment in academia. This paper describes and analyzes a typical case of esophageal cancer-induced esophageal pericardial fistula, and summarizes the etiology, clinical manifestations, diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis of this disease in combination with previous literature on esophageal pericardial fistula, so as to further improve the understanding of esophageal pericardial fistula and esophageal tumors.

Wang et al. (2024) conducted a case report in Esophageal pericardial fistula caused by esophageal carcinoma (n=1). Nasojejunal nutrition tube placement and conservative treatment was evaluated on Clinical outcome. A 75-year-old male with esophageal cancer developed a rare esophageal pericardial fistula and died shortly after discharge, illustrating the rapid progression and high mortality of this condition.
