Pseudomonas MA-1, a soil organism which forms α-(N-acetylaminomethylene)succinic acid (Compound A) as the first acyclic degradation product during growth on pyridoxine as a sole carbon source, also elaborates an enzyme that destroys this compound. This enzyme, apparently a hydrolase, has been purified approximately 22-fold from crude extracts and shown to catalyze Reaction i. At the purity [see PDF for equation] achieved (0.18 µmole of Compound A destroyed per mg of protein per min at 25°) no cofactor or metal ion requirements were observed, and no diffusible reaction intermediates have been detected.
