DNA-protein ASFV vaccine fails to protect piglets and hastens clinical signs and death versus controls.
Why the study?
There is no commercially available vaccine against African swine fever virus, and effective vaccines are urgently needed.

Combined DNA-protein ASFV vaccination failed to protect and hastened death; leaves open alternative antigen strategies for swine vaccines.
Sunwoo et al. (2019) studied African Swine Fever Virus (ASFV) infection (n=10). DNA-protein vaccine cocktail (ASFV plasmid DNA + recombinant proteins) vs. Non-vaccinated controls was evaluated on Survival following virulent ASFV challenge (p=0.0143). Vaccination of piglets with a combined DNA-protein ASFV antigen cocktail did not protect against virulent challenge and resulted in earlier onset of clinical signs and death compared to controls.
