ASFV-G-ΔC962R produces similar disease to parental ASFV-G, indicating C962R is not required for virulence.
Why the study?
African swine fever virus encodes more than 160 genes, but only a few have been studied in detail, leaving the open reading frame C962R uncharacterized.

C962R deletion does not attenuate ASFV in pigs; hypothesis-generating for identifying essential virulence genes in vaccine development.
Ramírez-Medina et al. (2020) studied African swine fever. Recombinant ASFV lacking the C962R gene (ASFV-G-ΔC962R) vs. Parental highly virulent field isolate Georgia2007 (ASFV-G) was evaluated on Clinical disease and virulence. Experimental infection of domestic pigs with ASFV-G-ΔC962R produced clinical disease similar to the parental ASFV-G, indicating the C962R gene is not required for virulence.
