Responding to discussions by Davies and Peltz, I deepen my exploration of analytic fostering, a proactive and generative approach for engaging “lost” patients and helping them find themselves in the analyst’s mind. I discuss the idea that analytic fostering is supported by an ongoing framing process, the co-creation of a transitional therapeutic space that is both malleable and containing. I also consider some of the ways that a fostering approach can be challenging for both patient and analyst as they navigate the space between old and new.
