Key result
Preoperative prehabilitation linked to ~15% shorter Timed Up and Go times in cancer surgery patients.
Why the study?
Prehabilitation is recommended in ERAS protocols for elderly surgical patients to optimize preoperative status, yet its adoption remains limited in Japan due to brief preparation periods and lack of insurance support.
Does prehabilitation improve postoperative pain, length of hospital stay, and physical function in elderly patients undergoing surgery?
Observational (n=24)
No
Does prehabilitation improve postoperative pain, length of hospital stay, and physical function in elderly patients undergoing surgery?
Absolute Event Rate: 4.1% vs 4.8%
p-value: p=0.0015
Prehabilitation improves postoperative outcomes in elderly surgical patients, but its adoption in Japan is hindered by systemic barriers.
Prehabilitation may enhance preoperative function in cancer surgery; leaves open effects on pain and stay in elderly patients pending prospective trials.

Hideki Taniguchi (2022) conducted an observational in Preoperative cancer (pancreatic, esophageal, colorectal) (n=24). Prehabilitation (resistance training, aerobic exercise, respiratory training) vs. Baseline (pre-intervention) was evaluated on Timed Up and Go (TUG) test time (seconds) (p=0.0015). A preoperative prehabilitation program significantly improved physical function, reducing Timed Up and Go test time from 4.8 seconds to 4.1 seconds (p=0.0015) in patients undergoing cancer surgery.
