new technique for in vivo measurement of absolute bone density is described. The procedure is based on the principle of Compton scattering. Corrections are built into the system for attenuation and variation produced by changes in the Z/A ratio of the elements in bone. The density of hemivertebrae measured by the new procedure correlates excellently with bone density measured by Archimedes' principle.
