Experimental analysis reveals damage ratio strength criteria accurately predict asphalt failure under compressive-tensile stress, suggesting valuable improvements for durable pavement design.
The failure behaviour of asphalt mixtures under compressive–tensile stress is consistent with the stress conditions in real pavement structures, making the study of their two-dimensional strength criterion crucial. This study investigates the strength and failure criteria of asphalt mixtures through platform splitting tests with different depths and biaxial compressive-tensile tests. By applying the octahedral strength theory and developing the damage ratio strength theory, a relationship based on inelastic volumetric expansion is established. It is verified that the damage ratio strength criterion has broader applicability under complex stress conditions, providing valuable references for pavement design and durability enhancement.
