Poly(melamine-urea-formaldehyde) microcapsules containing sulfur were prepared by in-situ polymerization. Several preparation parameters of microcapsules were investigated by analyzing the morphology, particle size and encapsulation efficiency. The morphologies indicated that sodium dodecyl sulfonate (SDS) was a suitable surfactant. The mean diameter of microcapsules decreased with increasing stirring rate and surfactant concentration. The high encapsulation efficiency was achieved by stirring at 300 rpm. The microcapsules were characterized by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscope (FT-IR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The microcapsules were applied in rubber, and the curometer test showed that it prevented blooming and improved the mechanical properties of NBR.
