A review is given of the use of tolyltriazole (also called tolutriazole, but more strictly 4-, 5-, or 6-methyl-1 H-benzotriazole) as an inhibitor for copper and brass in a variety of corrosive environments. The effect of a pretreatment with an aqueous solution of tolyltriazole was not as effective as one with benzotriazole in reducing the oxidation of copper in air at elevated temperatures, but it gave a similar degree of protection to copper in different corrosive atmospheres. Tolyltriazole was generally as good as, or better than, benzotriazole in inhibiting the corrosion of copper immersed in different aqueous solutions.
