Irrespective of the amount used, Me3SiN3 reacts with the monomeric AlI compound [HC{(CMe)(NAr)}2]Al at low temperature to afford a member of a new class of binary Al–N ring systems [HC{(CMe)(NAr)}2]Al[(NSiMe3)2N2] (see picture; Ar=2,6-iPr2C6H3), the first structurally characterized MN4 cyclic compound containing a Group 13 element.
