GPER1 activity and pregnancy protect against hypertension in older females.
Why the study?
Hypertension is a major cardiovascular risk in women, and the roles of GPER1 activity and parity in blood pressure regulation in aged females are not well understood.
Preclinical study reveals that GPER1 activity and parity protect against hypertension in aged females, highlighting therapeutic targets for postmenopausal cardiovascular health.
Hypertension is a major risk factor for cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in women.A hypofunctional variant of G protein-coupled estrogen receptor 1 (GPER1) was associated with higher blood pressure (BP) in women. 1 Similarly, GPER1 activation reduced BP in different rodent models, including menopausal models, 2 suggesting GPER1 as an antihypertensive target for postmenopausal hypertension.Although rarely studied, normal pregnancies also protect later maternal cardiovascular health. In a meta-analysis of ten prospective studies, the number of pregnancies was inversely related to maternal cardiovascular disease mortality.3 Parous hyperandrogenic rats were protected from postmenopausal hypertension.4 Limited studies suggest a potential link between pregnancy and GPER1.Here, we assessed the contribution of GPER1 activity and parity to BP regulation in aged females.

Singh et al. (2025) studied Hypertension. GPER1 activity and parity was evaluated on Blood pressure regulation. G-Protein-Coupled Estrogen Receptor 1 (GPER1) activity and pregnancy confer protection against hypertension in older females.
