Multivariable controllers, which efficiently manage thermal tuning for large systems, are proposed based on a novel state-space model of the tuning control problem. Worked examples of the controller design method are presented for the 1 × 2Lbinary tree and 2L× 2Lrouter/selector optical switching architectures, where we characterize the performance of the controller in correcting for geometry variations and demonstrating active cancellation of thermal disturbances simultaneously in multiple tuning variables based on a single scalar measurement signal.
