Key result
Factor Xa inhibitors cut recurrent VTE risk ~35% vs LMWH in cancer patients.
Why the study?
The bleeding risk associated with Factor Xa inhibitors compared to low molecular weight heparin in patients with cancer-associated venous thromboembolism remains ambiguous and concerning.

Supports Factor Xa inhibitors over LMWH for cancer-associated VTE; confirms reduced recurrence across randomized trials.
Meta-Analysis (n=17,781)
Do Factor Xa inhibitors reduce recurrent VTE compared to LMWH in patients with cancer-associated VTE?
Relative Risk: 0.65 (95% CI 0.49–0.85)
Absolute Event Rate: 5.66% vs 9.01%
p-value: p=0.002
Factor Xa inhibitors are an effective alternative to LMWH for cancer-associated VTE, significantly reducing VTE recurrence but with an increased risk of bleeding.
Qurashi et al. (2022) conducted a meta-analysis in Cancer-associated venous thromboembolism (CA-VTE) (n=17,781). Factor Xa inhibitors vs. Low molecular weight heparin (LMWH) was evaluated on Recurrence of venous thromboembolism (RCT pooled analysis) (RR 0.65, 95% CI 0.49, 0.85, p=0.002). In randomized controlled trials, Factor Xa inhibitors significantly reduced the risk of recurrent venous thromboembolism (RR 0.65) compared to low molecular weight heparin in patients with cancer.
