Key result
KCl depolarization induces GFP-Sam68 translocation to dendrites in 50% of hippocampal neurons vs unstimulated controls.
Why the study?
The regulation of neuronal RNA-binding proteins by changes in neuronal activity is not fully understood, particularly the activity-dependent translocation of Sam68.
Absolute Event Rate: 50% vs 4%
Sam68 undergoes activity-responsive translocation to the soma and dendrites of hippocampal neurons, suggesting a role in activity-dependent regulation of dendritic mRNAs.

Supports Sam68 role in activity-dependent dendritic mRNA regulation; hypothesis-generating for neuronal plasticity mechanisms.
Fredj et al. (2004) studied this question. Depolarization by KCl vs. Unstimulated neurons was evaluated on Dendritic GFP-Sam68 expression. Depolarization by 25 mM KCl induced the translocation of GFP-Sam68 to the dendrites in 50% of hippocampal neurons, compared to 4% in unstimulated neurons.
