Low-energy electron microscopy has been used to study the irreversible W(001)–O p(5×1)–p(2×2) surface transformation during oxygen deposition at 1050 K. Chains of p(2×2) nuclei form in a self-avoiding-random-walk pattern. It is concluded that oxygen diffusion is an important step in the reaction path to incorporation into the hot surface.
