Major advances in the study of mosquito genetics have been made since Kitzmiller (38) challenged mosquito workers in 1953 by noting that the non-existence of mosquito genetic information constitutes perhaps the larg est single deficiency in the tremendous amount of information which has been assembled concerning the Culicidae. Noteworthy progress in the formal genetics and cytogenetics of mosquitoes did follow in the next two decades, as is indicated by the chain of impressive reviews (25, 45, 65, 74, 93, 96). These developments and several historical factors contributed to the enthusiastic investigation of utilizing genetic systems as possible tools to control several mosquito species. The evolution of insecticide resistance in mosquitoes followed closely after the widespread use of pesticides, begin ning in the 1940s and 1950s, and created a need to explore alternative control methods.
