This study utilized a decolonization lens to examine the linguistic experiences of students entering human-service professions, and preparations to work with Spanish-speaking populations. The pervasiveness of English in social work and counseling education creates barriers for students and clients, negatively impacting helping relationships. The present study used an online questionnaire, gathering qualitative data from 31 participants enrolled in four-year undergraduate or graduate programs at Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSI). Findings indicated a lack of confidence among first-language (L1) and second-language (L2) Spanish speakers when using Spanish in practicums with Spanish speaking clients. These findings highlight the importance of embedding international languages and intercultural communication skills within educational curricula for helping professions.
