It does not appear to be possible to give a quantitative account of the angle of contact of a continuous liquid in terms of cohesional forces. By using Young's energy relation and making allowance for the effects of adsorbed films on the surface of the solid, expressions are derived for the advancing and receding angles, and a general explanation of the hysteresis of the angle of contact is put forward.
