Hyperbaric oxygen therapy linked to ~7-point higher MoCA scores in post-acute severe traumatic brain injury.
Why the study?
Cognitive impairment after severe TBI significantly affects rehabilitation outcomes and is not directly addressed by current pharmacological or therapeutic services.
Case-Control (n=37)
Non-randomized
No
Cognitive impairment post TBI is an important factor in rehabilitation outcomes. Pharmacological and therapeutic services do not directly address damage to the cortical infrastructure. Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is known to improve brain function and healing.

Ravi Sankaran (2020) conducted a case-control in Severe Traumatic Brain Injury (n=37). Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy vs. Standard care / Control was evaluated on Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) score post-intervention (p=0.001). Hyperbaric oxygen therapy significantly improved cognitive performance compared to control (MoCA score 20.15 vs 13.4, p=0.001) in patients with severe traumatic brain injury in the post-acute phase.
