Experimental study demonstrates faster decay times in Pr:CaF2 crystals under alpha excitation, suggesting suitability for high-count-rate charged-particle detection.
The scintillation properties of Pr:CaF 2 were studied in comparison with those of Eu:CaF 2 under α-ray excitation using a sealed source of 241 Am.The relative light yields of the Pr:CaF 2 crystals were approximately 0.6-13% of the Eu:CaF 2 crystal that is known as a conventional scintillator for charged-particle detection. The scintillation decay times of the Pr:CaF 2 crystals were significantly faster than that of the Eu:CaF 2 crystal. Therefore, the Pr:CaF 2 crystals can be used for charged-particle measurements with high count rates.
