Prehospital trauma airway review suggests a silver standard alternative when rapid sequence induction is impractical.
Why the study?
Advanced airway management in the prehospital setting for trauma remains controversial with uncertainty about optimal methods and training.
The paper explores options for prehospital emergency anaesthesia in trauma and suggests a 'silver standard' alternative when classical rapid sequence induction is impractical.
Alternative prehospital airway strategies may merit consideration when RSI is impractical; leaves open the need for prospective outcome data before adoption.
Advanced airway management in the prehospital arena remains controversial. This paper aims to explore some of the evidence and options available and propose a way forward. Options for provision of, and training in, pre-hospital emergency anaesthesia are explored and alternative strategies are discussed. Where classical rapid sequence induction of anaesthesia proves impractical for operational reasons or due to lack of facilities, training opportunities or skills maintenance, a potential ‘silver standard’ is suggested as an alternative.

John A. Hickman (2006) conducted a review in Trauma requiring prehospital advanced airway management. Prehospital advanced airway management was evaluated. A review of prehospital advanced airway management for trauma in the UK suggests a 'silver standard' alternative when classical rapid sequence induction of anaesthesia is impractical.
