A generalized finite difference scheme is developed to represent the one‐dimensional consolidation process. The difference equations are derived from integral balance equations which represent the soil as a mixture of two constituents. No restrictions are placed on the soil constitutive properties or stratigraphy. An approach to stability analysis for the scheme is outlined, and an example problem is presented.
