Trigeminal nerve electroacupuncture increases cerebral blood flow in the prefrontal cortex versus control.
Why the study?
The autonomic nervous system and trigeminal nerve are involved in regulating cerebral blood flow in the prefrontal cortex, but the effect of electroacupuncture on these functions was unclear.
Does 100 Hz electroacupuncture to the trigeminal nerve area improve cerebral blood flow and autonomic nervous system function in healthy volunteers?

Does 100 Hz electroacupuncture to the trigeminal nerve area improve cerebral blood flow and autonomic nervous system function in healthy volunteers?
p-value: p=0.048 (left), 0.016 (right)
Delivery of 100 Hz electroacupuncture to the trigeminal nerve area reduces heart rate and increases parasympathetic nervous activity and cerebral blood flow in healthy volunteers.

100 Hz trigeminal EA may increase prefrontal CBF via parasympathetic activation in healthy volunteers; leaves open relevance for patients.
Waki et al. (2017) conducted an RCT in Healthy volunteers (n=16). Electroacupuncture to the trigeminal nerve area vs. Control was evaluated on Cerebral blood flow in the prefrontal cortex (p=0.048 (left), 0.016 (right)). Electroacupuncture to the trigeminal nerve area significantly increased cerebral blood flow in the left (p=0.048) and right (p=0.016) prefrontal cortex compared with control.
