The MIs locus was described in the late 1960s by Hilliard Festenstein; cultures of lymphocytes with a disparity at this locus induces intense, unidirectional T-cell proliferative responses. The genetics and immunobiology of this immunological enigma were discussed at a recent Howard Hughes Medical Institute Workshop.∗
