These analogues show targeted antiviral activity in preclinical models; leaves open clinical translation for vaccinia, RSV, and HSV.
Aerschot et al. (1993) studied Viral infection. C-alkylated purine nucleosides (8-methyladenosine, 8-ethyladenosine, 8-vinyladenosine) was evaluated on Antiviral activity and cytotoxicity. 8-Methyladenosine potently inhibited vaccinia virus, while 8-ethyl- and 8-vinyladenosine inhibited respiratory syncytial virus, and 8-vinyladenosine showed activity against herpes simplex virus type 1.
